The Ultimate Guide to Planning a Destination Wedding in the UK

Planning a destination wedding in the UK is an exciting prospect, but there’s also much to consider.

The Ultimate Guide to Planning a Destination Wedding in the UK

You’ve chosen a very special location for your destination wedding. The UK is brimming with luxurious venues – both modern and historic – not to mention spectacular scenery and plenty of things for your guests to see and enjoy while they’re here. However, planning such an important occasion from afar can be challenging. Read on to discover my top tips and find links to an abundance of helpful resources…

My Tips for Planning a Destination Wedding in the UK

1. Consider Your Timeline

I would recommend starting to plan your UK destination wedding at least 12-18 months in advance. This should give you enough time to secure your preferred venue and suppliers.

Destination weddings require extra planning from guests too, so if you want people to come, it's vital you give them plenty of notice. Whether you send an official Save The Date or rely on something more informal ('we're aiming for somewhere in the UK in July 2028'), we'd recommend giving at least 9-10 months warning.

Some guests won't book things like flights and accommodation until they receive a full invitation, so it's also important to send these a little earlier than you would for a local wedding.

2. Work with a Trusted Local Wedding Planner

I may be biased, but I believe working with a local wedding planner is incredibly important. Organising a UK wedding from overseas can be very overwhelming and difficult, particularly if you’re unable to visit venues in-person or meet with local suppliers. I understand the anxiety this can cause.

I’ll be your trusted representative throughout the planning process – researching, observing, and feeding back on your behalf. I can also serve as a much-needed point of contact for guests and suppliers, reducing demands on your time and limiting stress. As an expert, I’ll also suggest things you might otherwise overlook, elevating your celebration and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

3. Choose the Right Venue

I’ve spent many years helping couples find the perfect setting for their overseas celebration in the UK. You have so many options to choose from – historic estates, stately homes, castles, luxurious city hotels, and romantic coastal retreats. 4. Navigate the Legalities

If you’re intending to do the ‘legal bit’ of your wedding here in the UK, you’ll need to follow the relevant government guidelines. Generally speaking, you will be expected to apply for a marriage visitor visa or a family visa to come to the UK to give notice and get married or form a civil partnership.

‘Giving notice’ involves signing a legal statement at your local register office to say you intend to get married or form a civil partnership. You must give notice together at least 29 days before your ceremony, and your ceremony must take place within 12 months.

Of course, getting legally married before (or after) your UK destination wedding is also an option. Read How to Do the Legal Bit First and Plan a Heartfelt, Fun-Filled Party Later for more on this.

5. Prioritise Guest Experience

Obviously, guest experience should always be a priority, but planning a destination wedding in the UK means there are a few location specific things to consider.

For example, if the majority of your guests will be flying in to attend your celebration, it’s important to check the location of the airport in relation to your wedding venue. Technically, London has six international airports, but some are actually located in surrounding counties rather than within the city boundaries. This can affect the length and ease of airport transfers. The UK also has a number of regional airports which may be a better option depending on where your venue is located and where your guests are flying from.

The unpredictable UK weather should also be a key consideration in your planning, especially if you’re hoping to spend some or all of your wedding outside. Regardless of the time of year, you will need a back-up indoor option to ensure everybody’s comfort. Bear in mind, it’s not unusual to experience every kind of weather in one day. In the summer, you and your guests might need SPF, umbrellas, AND an extra layer for warmth!

In Summary…

Here are my expert tips for planning a destination wedding in the UK…

  • Start planning at least 12-18 months in advance.
  • Seek out a local wedding planner to reduce anxiety and stress.
  • Decide whereabouts in the UK you’d like to get married (city, countryside or coast) and choose your wedding venue accordingly.
  • Check the legal requirements and complete all the relevant paperwork.
  • In every decision you make, put guest experience first.
