If you’re planning a Caribbean destination wedding, you’ll need to make sure it’s valid here in the UK too. Here’s what you need to know…
Yes, in general, your marriage in the Caribbean will be legally recognised in the UK provided it was contracted according to the law in the country in which it was officiated.
In other words, the marriage must be recognised as legal in the country in which it took place. This means you must comply with any procedures required locally such as giving notice or having witnesses.
As well as adhering to local laws, each party must be legally allowed to marry under the laws of the country in which they are domiciled (this is your main, permanent home or the country to which you intend to return). If your home country is England or Wales, these requirements are set out in the Marriage Act 1949 and include things like being old enough to marry, i.e. 18 or over. The minimum age in other countries could be different.
Any previous marriages must be properly terminated through divorce as per the requirements of UK law. If one party is a non-UK citizen and you plan to reside in the UK, it’s also important to ensure the marriage complies with UK immigration laws.
You do not need to register a foreign marriage in the UK, but it is important to have evidence that it took place in the form of the original marriage certificate. If this is not in English, then a certified translation will need to be obtained.
What’s the First Thing We Should Do?
Laws vary by island, so it’s best to check the specific entry and marriage requirements with the local embassy, consulate, or your destination wedding planner before booking.

Yes! You could opt for a symbolic ceremony – a ceremony that has symbolic meaning but no legal or religious significance. To those present, it seems like any other marriage ceremony, albeit a very personal one, but it’s not legally binding. This means you need to plan a separate legal ceremony at home in the UK.
Planning a symbolic ceremony reduces some of the legal and administrative challenges associated with getting married overseas. If you’re doing the ‘legal bit’ back home, you don’t need to worry about meeting residency requirements or completing complicated paperwork.
A symbolic ceremony also removes the need to choose a licensed wedding venue. You’ll have to take local customs and laws into consideration, but you should be able to say, ‘I do’ almost anywhere. The same goes for your officiant. You can book an experienced Wedding Celebrant, but you’re also free to ask a friend or loved one to perform the ceremony.
I’ve worked with a number of couples who have chosen to have a separate civil ceremony before their destination wedding in the Caribbean. If you’re interested in doing the same, I’d encourage you to explore the following links:
