From Inspiration Overload to Clear Vision – How to Plan a Cohesive Wedding

Feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of wedding inspiration is a common experience. There’s so much out there to consume, process, and consider. Rather than fuelling creativity and sparking ideas, too much inspiration can lead to analysis paralysis. How are you supposed to narrow down your ideas and plan a cohesive wedding?

My Tips for Avoiding Wedding Inspo Overwhelm

I want to start by saying it’s perfectly normal to ride the wave of excitement that inevitably follows an engagement. This is a special chapter of your lives, and a little daydreaming is to be expected! By all means, pore over pretty pictures and let your imagination run wild! However, when you’re ready to start planning ‘properly’, I’d encourage you to gather inspiration with intention.

Once upon a time, looking for wedding inspiration meant browsing a few magazines and tearing out the pictures you liked. Now, there are multiple platforms with a constant stream of inspirational content. You’ll find blog posts filled with beautiful photography, Instagram reels, TikTok videos, and Pinterest boards bursting with ideas. No wonder it’s so hard to narrow down your wedding ideas!

To avoid overwhelm, I’d recommend sticking to one or two digital spaces for collecting inspiration. For example, Pinterest and/or Instagram. Try to organise things in a way that’s easy to reference. For example, you could create a Pinterest board or Instagram Collection for each of the different elements of your wedding – outfits, florals, venue styling, food, etc. Lumping everything together is a recipe for overwhelm!

Creativity loves constraints, so when you start gathering images, give yourself boundaries. Consider where and when you’d like to get married, the type of venue you’re drawn to, and the size of your guest list. Then, look for inspiration that reflects the wedding you have in mind.

If you’re planning a small, intimate Caribbean wedding, it doesn’t make sense to collect images of winter nuptials in the UK with a guest list of 150+! I’ve also heard wedding hair stylists say you should only gather inspiration pics that feature the same hair colour and texture as your own. Apparently, certain styles can look very different on blonde versus brunette hair.

Finally, every time you save a piece of inspiration or see an idea you like, think about why you’re drawn to it. You might even want to note down your reasons. Doing this can help you refine your ideas further down the line. Did you save that image of a bouquet because you liked the colours? Was it a particular bloom you fell in love with? Or did you want your wedding florist to create something with a similar shape or texture?

How to Plan a Cohesive Wedding

So, you’ve been gathering inspiration with intention. What happens next? How do you turn these ideas into a cohesive wedding that reflects who you are as a couple?

Rather than thinking about how things are going to look on your wedding day, consider how you want you and your guests to feel. What sort of vibe do you want? Are you aiming for a laidback party atmosphere or do you want something more formal and refined? Focusing on the feeling you want to create is a great way to guide your choices.

These days, creating a cohesive look for your wedding isn’t about perfectly matching the colour of your napkins to the groomsmen’s ties! It means making sure nothing feels out of place through the subtle repetition of colour, shape, pattern, and texture. You want to make sure different items and elements sit harmoniously together.

For example, rather than choosing a single colour for your wedding, I’d recommend choosing a base palette with one or two accent colours. This will give you a range of hues to work with. Depending on the overall look you’re hoping to achieve, you could also select a metallic finish (e.g. champagne, gold, silver or copper) or some natural materials (e.g. wood, silk, rattan etc.).  Repeating these elements throughout your celebration is the key to creating a cohesive look.
