Here's what Rochelle had to say when I interviewed her:
Whilst on maternity leave from my job with a London law firm, I had made the decision that I didn't want to return, but hadn't yet decided what I was going to do instead. Out for dinner with a friend one evening, she commented that I always did my eye makeup well and jokingly suggested I should be a makeup artist. I had never even thought about doing something like that but a seed was planted and three months later I had a website, a makeup kit and my first client! Ten years later and I haven't looked back since.
Far too many things to mention but I love love love weddings so to be involved with so many each year is amazing. I love researching new products, seeing every bride's dress, the buzz of working on a photoshoot but by far the best thing is meeting so many different people. Everyone has a story to tell and for that hour that they're in my makeup chair I never know what we will end up talking about. I also have some lovely MUA friends who I have met through this industry and meeting so many lovely brides is amazing. I still get a buzz every time a new enquiry drops into my inbox.
I love everything about my job, but when a bride told me that she had organised her wedding date around the dates I was available so she could be sure she could book me made me feel warm and fuzzy!
Another thing that comes to mind is when I was lucky enough to meet a MUA who I had admired for a long time and she told me that she was ‘always hearing good things about me'. The fact that she even knew who I was made my day. I really enjoyed working on a tv commercial earlier this year and a couple of film projects. Also word of mouth recommendations are always lovely. There is one family I have done all three sisters' weddings and four of their extended family, they pretty much kept me in business last year and we're still going strong.
Every day is different but a typical ‘wedding' day starts with me waking early (I never sleep properly when I have a wedding the next day), checking my Facebook page and email before I get up and then a good strong cup of Yorkshire Tea. A final check of my kit and brushes before setting off and then getting to the venue a little earlier than planned. Wedding prep is usually in full swing when I get there and the morning goes very quickly.
If I don't have another wedding that day, I like to stay with the bride until she is dressed and grab a couple of photos. More often than not I have another wedding to do so it's a full day of brides. It's usually a McDonalds between weddings and then once home, brushes and kit are cleaned and everything prepped for the next day. Once home I try and switch off and spend time with my husband and daughter. My husband works away during the week so finding that balance of work and family time can be difficult, especially as I find it very hard to ignore my BlackBerry which is always by my side! I'm usually in bed by 9.30pm, definitely not a night owl!
I have a few things in the pipeline which I'm excited about.
A re-branding and relaunch hopefully before September. I have my eye on a new studio and hopefully that will work out. I've been looking for the right premises for a year now. While bridal work is still going to be very much my bread and butter, next year I'm moving in a slightly different direction than bridal which I'm very excited about - can't say any more than that for now!
How fabulous Rochelle! Keep us posted with your exciting plans and thank you for taking the time to be interviewed for Benessamy followers.
