Today I'm pleased to welcome East Midlands based award winning fashion designer Fazane Malik. Fazane won ‘Midlands Independent Designer of the Year 2013' and was shortlisted for ‘Small Business of the Year' at the Nottingham Post Women in Business Awards in 2014.
Fazane and husband Paul celebrated their Derbyshire wedding with a marquee reception at Shiningford Manor. Here's Fazane with some of the gorgeous details of her beautiful wedding day - including her gorgeous dress and the bridesmaids dresses which she designed.....
Paul proposed to me but it didn't quite go to plan! Originally he had planned a romantic champagne picnic at the top of a mountain in Derbyshire but a) I was actually really sick the day he'd planned it for and b) it was absolutely chucking it down on the day! He madly tried to find a nice restaurant he could take me to instead but it was completely packed with it being Christmas time so he didn't feel he could propose to me there either! Eventually on the way home he took me into a beautiful park and got down on his knee in the mud and rain and proposed there! Not quite what he wanted but I thought it was wonderful!!
I'm a designer with my own womenswear label so I obviously designed it myself! I chose the lace from a local lace supplier and then designed into it, made a mock-up and pattern then sent the final dress off to be made by the factory who make my collections for me.
I had my hair done by KB Wedding Hair Specialist as I have worked with her on a fashion shoot for my own label. Make-up was done by Rochelle O'Brien as again I have worked with her many times now on various shoots and knew I could trust her implicitly to make me look amazing! In fact I changed my mind about my make-up after my trial and trusted her that much to try my new idea on my wedding day!
My shoes were from a designer called Georgina Goodman'! I have collected her shoes for a while now but sadly she no longer trades....I messaged her anyway on the off chance she might be starting up again and lucky me....I was able to buy a couple of sample pairs from a past collection!
We chose All Saints Church in Bradley for the wedding ceremony as Paul's Grounds Maintenance company does a lot of work in the area and he had always thought it was such a beautiful place to get married! Luckily I agreed!
For the reception we chose Shiningford Manor, Carsington Water as again Paul maintains the grounds there for the owners. We thought it would be perfect as we could stay in the farmhouse with our family for the whole weekend and have a marquee on the garden for the reception. We wanted something completely different and to be able to organise the whole thing ourselves so doing it this way was perfect for us. Plus there was a swimming pool so the next day we were able to have a BBQ and pool party!
With us having a rustic style farmhouse as the venue we wanted to reflect this in the décor! Our colour scheme was gold, navy, cream and brown and this was chosen because of the gold fabric I chose for the bridesmaids dresses and the groomsmen's suits.
I made all the bunting by hand with the help of friends, placemats were hand made out of a tree Paul had cut down, table runners were cut out from an old copy of Pride & Prejudice with heart shapes cut out of the edges, table centre pieces were old wine bottles with candles in and table names were places and names from Pride & Prejudice. Flowers were all hand dried by myself and my mum using flowers Paul had bought me + flowers from her garden.
The cake was hand-made by Paul's mum. We had a naked cake in layers of chocolate orange and lemon drizzle finished with lots of fresh strawberries.Tables were in long rows with wooden benches instead of the usual round tables and chairs to reflect out rustic theme.
Our band was ‘The Distractions' which is managed by my brother Joe! We had entertainment before the wedding breakfast by David Fox Magician and our first dance was ‘latch' by Sam Smith...spectacularly gate-crashed by my father which turned into the most epic dance off between him and Paul! :-) x
Just try not to stress and get caught up in making everything perfect. Remember the day is about you getting married....not everything else! Quite a few things went wrong or didn't turn out how I wanted but you know what I just didn't care....most people don't notice anyway and I just wanted to get married to the love of my life....everything else didn't matter to me.
....oh and don't try an please everyone...it's impossible to and at the end of the day it's YOUR wedding not anyone elses!
Thank you Fazane for sharing your beautiful wedding day with us and for your advice to brides - absolutely spot on!
